Small Favors — The Clay Studio

Mini Masterpieces — Philadelphia, PA

The 19th annual Small Favors Exhibition

Apr 10th - Jun 29th, 2025

Artists in Small Favors range from the most established ceramic artists to young artists new to the field. Small Favors engages artists' creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a small scale. Some artists' work is similar to what they usually do but at a reduced scale. Others use it to break away from what they create in their daily studio practice. There is an open call each year for juried work and a group of invited artists who participate. This year, we have artworks from Japan, China, Budapest, and other places around the United States.”

“In 2025, The Clay Studio is excited to present the 19th anniversary of this beloved exhibition. Among almost 400 small artworks displayed in 4-inch cubes, you will find big ideas, individuality, and material awareness. A few years ago, we invited artists outside the ceramic world to participate to celebrate that this truly is an exhibition for everyone. Most works are examples of small ceramic artworks ranging from tiny mugs to intricate sculptures.

Red Rocks Reflection, 2024

Ceramic, fired in La Serra Anagama

2.75 x 2.75 x 1”

My most recent work was fired in the La Serra Collective Anagama kiln during my recent artist residency in Denver, where I reconnected with my artistic voice and focused on abstract shapes and forms that define my work—This piece, Red Rocks Reflection, was made as a model or maquette of a larger form to come. I created the piece stemming from shapes drawn in my sketchbooks, where I begin most of my work. I began with a shape on paper and then mirrored it on its horizontal axis, creating a repeated and reflected form. I translated the flat drawing into a dimensional piece, made out of a white clay body. For its finish, I dipped it in a flashing slip and fired the work with the Collective, participating in the week-long firing process from start to finish.
