About Alex
My name is Alex. Nicknamed “Axel”.
On Ceramic Sculpture
I create abstract and biomorphic works in clay, blending shapes and forms found in the body and landscapes in sculptures.
My body of work is defined by a mixture of figuration and abstraction. To me, the physicality ceramic artists explore in the pliability of the medium relates directly to the artist’s understanding and mastery of form itself. In the process of shaping and molding my pieces, I feel connected both physically and psychologically to the body and its nuances and meanings.
I have also been influenced by the places and people I meet whenever I move into a new environment. The plains of North Dakota, maritime scenery of Maine and deserts of Arizona have all filtered into my work and affected my forms in both conscious and subconscious ways. Figurative works morph into boat- and sail-like vessel forms that have then peaked into mountainous landscapes.
I strive to create pieces that, while stemming from personal sources and inspirations purposeful and identifiable to me as the creator, expand beyond my story and challenge their viewers to assign meaning and worth according to their own conclusions. Expressionistic styles and abstract forms translate into works that make ambiguity and individual experience the heart of their existence.

sustain my creative explorations
My path in ceramics has always blended studio practice with education, community, and administration. After earning my BFA degrees in Painting and Ceramics at
Minot State University in Minot, ND, I began my career with a residency at
Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Maine (2012), where I created a body of work rooted in the local clay body and finished with terra sigillata. I carried this material focus with me to Arizona State University (2013–2014), where I pursued post-baccalaureate studies while also working at the ASU Art Museum and Ceramic Research Center. As Assistant to the Curator of Education, I led tours and supported programming for exhibitions including Crafting a Continuum, and I had the privilege of studying with Kurt Weiser while he was Regents Professor, as well as learning from Peter Held during his time as Director of the CRC. These experiences laid the foundation for my dual commitment to artistic practice and program support, and ultimately connected me to Ferrin Contemporary and to the East Coast.
I moved to the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts as part of the Berkshire Hills Internship Program (2014), where I earned a professional certificate in Arts Management while interning at Ferrin Contemporary. As part of the program, I worked with a team to research the role of creative placemaking for teens in North Adams, producing a collaborative white paper and co-hosting a mini-conference that included panel discussions, program strategies, and community assessment. My contribution combined research on program development and fundraising with insights from my internship site, Ferrin Contemporary, tying local community needs to organizational practice.
At Ferrin Contemporary, where I grew from intern to Managing Director over more than a decade, I developed backend WordPress systems for the gallery website, managed financial operations, and organized major exhibitions and projects. I oversaw collections care, from condition reporting to packing and documentation, and I trained interns in professional skills ranging from gallery administration to digital content. This work gave me a deep appreciation for the structures that allow artists’ voices to be amplified and preserved. I worked on developing the support materials and archives for artists like Mara & Roy Superior, Raymon Elozua, and Coille Hooven, and The Victoria Schonfeld Collection, which highlights the work I completed on compendiums of ceramic art. I also built websites and developed artist profiles for Mara Superior, Kadri Pärnamets, Sergei Isupov, as well as online portfolios for artists like Paul Scott, whose New American Scenery project guided touring exhibitions and site-specific installations. Shows such as CERAMIC TOP 40, Revive, Remix & Respond, Linda Sikora: DARKENING GROUND, and Our America/Whose America? all gave me chances to develop curatorial design and production skillsets.
Through Project Art 01026, I helped coordinate summer and winter residencies, supported visiting artists, and co-organized events such as the Hops & Pots fundraisers for Studio Potter Journal and workshops with artists such as Sergei Isupov, Peter Pincus, Crystal Morey, Jason Walker, and Cristina Córdova. I also contributed to national projects such as artKamp: Indigo Mass with Vipoo Srivilasa, and Apprenticelines with Mark Shapiro and Steve Theberge. These initiatives taught me how to design systems that balance creative vision with logistical detail, ensuring programs run smoothly while staying true to artistic intent.
I went on to co-found GrowlerFest with Bradley Klem, a project that began in Western Massachusetts in partnership with Project Art and expanded across the country. GrowlerFest East & West launched simultaneously in 2015 with exhibitions at Project Art in Cummington, MA and Eutectic Gallery in Portland, OR. We then organized GrowlerFest Midwest at Free State Brewing Company in Lawrence, KS as a partner program for NCECA 2016, followed by GrowlerFest at the Brew House in Pittsburgh, PA (2018) in collaboration with the Brew House Association. Supported by Studio Potter, Musing About Mud, The Red Clay Rambler, Ferrin Contemporary, and Project Art, the project connected ceramics with broader cultural contexts through craft, design, and community. It was featured in Ceramics Monthly (September 2016) and other forums, and we presented about it at Harvard’s Office for the Arts New Voices series (2015) and NCECA Blinc 20/20 (2016).
My own studio practice continues to anchor my career. I have been a resident at Project Art 01026 (2014–2019), Guldagergaard International Research Center in Denmark (2016, Alice in Wonderland exhibition), and La Serra Collective in Colorado (2024, returning 2026). Exhibiting in Small Favors at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia (2024), We Are Not (in)Visible, a featured concurrent exhibition at NCECA in Pittsburgh (2018) (), and artKamp: Indigo Mass at Ferrin Contemporary (2015) has kept me grounded in the shared experiences of the artists I serve. Most recently, I was honored to be selected as a Scholarship Recipient for the American Ceramics Circle 2024 Symposium, an experience that further affirmed my dedication to ongoing learning and to engaging with the history and scholarship of ceramics as part of my professional practice.
